History of the Flint Male Chorus

The Flint Male Chorus was organized in 1943 as the Chevrolet-Flint Male Chorus. At that time, most of the men were employed by the Chevrolet Manufacturing Division of GM in downtown Flint. Today, 60 years later, the singers come from all walks of life in Flint and the surrounding communities. The chorus is directed by Matthew J. Packer and accompanied by Cathy Watson.

The Flint Male Chorus performs music of many styles and periods including spirituals, folk music, musical theater, as well as traditional sacred and secular pieces.

Averaging 30 to 40 voices strong annually, the men sing for churches, business, civic and private groups throughout mid-Michigan and averages 15-20 performances per season.  The Chorus has performed in International Sings at Winnipeg, Manitoba (1988), Marquette, Michigan (1993), and Buffalo, New York (1998). They belong to the Great Lakes Male Chorus Association which has 11 choruses ranging from the mid-state area through the east and west borders, with one chorus each from Indiana and Ohio. A Big Sing is held every year in a different city.
